the gift of form

The morning sun cast a warm glow as I made my way to the Zen center in Austin, Texas. It was a significant day, as I was turning 23 and felt compelled to mark this milestone with a new beginning. I had always been curious about meditation and the potential for self-discovery it offered. So, on this special day, I decided to dive into the world of Zen and ZaZen meditation.

Orientation Class with Ellen

Upon arriving at the Zen center, I left my shoes at the door and was quietly greeted by a few friendly folks, one of them who I would soon learn was my Orientation Leader, Ellen. Her presence was both calming and reassuring. I was her only student that morning and we would spend 1 hour together before entering the Zendo (meditation room, I learned).

In this hour, Ellen taught me 3 fundamentals of meditation:

1. Proper Form: The fundamentals of proper posture and form for ZaZen emphasized the significance of sitting with a straight spine, relaxed shoulders, and an open yet focused gaze. As we practiced this form, I could feel the initial steps of self-discipline taking root within me, guided by her gentle encouragement.

2. Etiquette and Rituals: The etiquette and rituals of the Zen Center included bowing as a sign of respect, Kinhin (walking meditation), and silent communal activities. These rituals instilled a sense of reverence and mindfulness, enhancing the accountability I felt toward both the practice and the community.

3. Structure of ZaZen: From entering and exiting the meditation hall to the precise timing of the sessions, this structured approach created a sense of responsibility, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established conventions.

Sitting in My First Meditation

After the orientation class, I was ready to experience ZaZen for the first time. The hour of learning and preparation with Ellen had instilled a sense of accountability and discipline. As I entered the meditation hall, bowed in respect, I felt a profound connection to the practice, the community, and myself. The accountability I'd learned through Ellen's guidance led to a peaceful and transformative meditation session.

The Gift of Form and Structure

My visit to the Zen center on my 23rd birthday was an unforgettable and transformative experience. Ellen's guidance and lessons on the structure, etiquette, and form of meditation were a priceless gift of form. Through her teachings, I not only learned the art of meditation but also gained a deeper understanding of self-discipline that extended far beyond that day.

The structure and form I acquired under Ellen's guidance continue to be a cornerstone of my daily meditation practice.
